Watch Lamine Yamal insane goals and skills at 19

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is only 19 but he is already rewriting Champions League history. On September 9, 2026, he broke Kylian Mbappe's long-standing record for most goal contributions as a teenager in the competition.

The record came during Barcelona's 5-1 win over Feyenoord in the opening match of the 2026-27 Champions League league phase at Camp Nou. Yamal assisted Raphinha for the opening goal inside three minutes to reach 21 goal involvements as a teenager, overtaking Mbappe's 20.

How He Broke Mbappe's Record

According to Opta, Yamal had 21 Champions League goal involvements (11 goals, 10 assists) with that first assist, the most by a teenager in history, overtaking Mbappe's 20. He then added a free-kick goal in the 77th minute and a second assist for Gabriel Jesus to end the night on 23 contributions (12 goals, 11 assists).

It was a historic night for other reasons too. At 19 years and 58 days, Yamal became the youngest captain in Barcelona's Champions League history, and the youngest player to score a direct free-kick for a La Liga club in the competition.

Backheel Finish That Shocked Teammates

Five days before Feyenoord, Yamal went viral in Barcelona training. He collected the ball inside the box, beat the goalkeeper and finished with an audacious backheel flick that left teammates applauding. The touch summed up the confidence the teenager carries after a World Cup-winning summer with Spain.

First Hat-Trick vs Villarreal and La Liga Form

His breakout La Liga moment came on February 28, 2026, when he scored his first professional hat-trick in Barcelona's 4-1 win over Villarreal. One goal saw him pick the ball from the half-line, dribble past four players and curl into the top corner. He became the youngest player in the 21st century to score a hat-trick in La Liga, finishing the 2025-26 season with 16 goals and 11 assists as top assist provider.

This season he has started strong again with 7 goal contributions in 5 games across all competitions.

World Cup 2026 Winner and Ballon d'Or Favourite

Yamal started all 8 games as Spain won the 2026 World Cup in North America, leading the tournament with 49 dribble attempts and 22 successful dribbles. His skills including Trivela outside-foot assists, La Croqueta, Elastico and nutmegs were central to Spain's run.

With three La Liga titles already and a World Cup medal at 19, he has been named on the Ballon d'Or shortlist for the third consecutive year and is among the favourites for 2026.

Why It Matters: Mbappe's teenage UCL record stood for 8 years. Yamal not only broke it but extended it to 23 with a whole UCL campaign still ahead before he turns 20 in July 2027. For Barcelona fans, it shows the post-Messi era has a new icon who can decide big games with assists, free-kicks and even training-ground backheels.
