The Plateau State Ministry of Information & Communication has issued a public health advisory urging residents to watch out for the signs and symptoms of Diphtheria, a serious bacterial infection that affects the nose, throat, and sometimes the skin.
According to the advisory, common symptoms of Diphtheria include runny nose, cough, red eye, sore throat, fever, and neck swelling which can make the neck appear thick. A major warning sign is the presence of a thick grey or white membrane in the throat, which can make breathing and swallowing difficult.
Health officials advise that anyone experiencing these symptoms, especially fever combined with sore throat and the membrane in the throat, should visit the nearest hospital or health center immediately. The Ministry also stressed that Diphtheria is preventable through vaccination and urged parents to ensure their children are fully immunized.
